Back in 2012, I facilitated at workshop for The Grail in response to the 2011-2012 Social Justice Statement “Building Bridges Not Wall: Prisons and the Justice System.” At the time I was a Prison Chaplain at a Remand Centre for 1000 men entering custody. The women from The Grail asked how they could support inmates, the work of the Chaplains and be builders of bridges not walls. And so, inspired by the Prison Journal Project of Sr Joan Chittister in the USA, the Prison Journal Project was born. To date we have given away 2,000 copies and sold another 2,000!
Now in 2020 we are releasing the third edition of “A Personal Journal: Thoughts, Images and Reflections.” This 80-page A5 sized journal contains beautiful photographs and quotations from across cultures and times. Blank pages allow one to record their own thoughts and words of wisdom.
This journal is a gift; a gift which represents a relationship between two people – one on ‘the outside’ who purchased a copy and one on ‘the inside’ who has been given a copy. This journal is also a relationship between The Grail and those on ‘the inside’. In producing and sharing this journal, the women of The Grail feel that we are in some way standing in solidarity with Prisoners. We invite others to do the same, remembering those who are often forgotten in our society. Prisoners come in many forms and while the original journals were distributed to inmates in the correctional centres, this third edition will also be offered to political or social refugees. We are also reminded that every one of us is imprisoned in some way.
We have been greatly encouraged by the many positive responses to our first two editions of “A Personal Journal” published in 2013 and 2015. We are delighted to share with you the third edition of “A Personal Journal: Thoughts, Images, Reflections” and encourage you to share it with others.
